Desperate: new track remix from Cuebur & Rob Rodell

Cuebur and Rob Rodell, who scored a House hit with the track “Could This Be Love” that tore up the airwaves and the dance floors and was certified gold in terms of sales, have collaborated again on a new House track called “Desperate.”

“Desperate chronicles the love-hate relationship between two people,” explains SAMA nominee Rob Rodell. “The words speak about how an infatuation becomes a recipe for heartache over someone that you are desperately in love with, that you will eventually hate – both because…

Upcoming albums, videos & shows

I am very excited to be working on several new projects:

  • New albums (Aoide, which is a pop album; The Classical Album; and Christmas with Family)
  • I am returning to older music to make music videos for each of my songs, and this is a major focus for this year
  • I am doing a birthday gig at Theatre on the Square at Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton on 30 August this year - I will use the date as further promotion of the "This is My Telos"album, which is a gorgeous work that lends itself so well to that venue

Get off your musical ass

So I am super-duper excited to be launching my second book on the music industry on Thursday 14 December 2017 at Skoobs Theatre of Books in Montecasino, Johannesburg. This new book is also the text book for students who do my music business courses, and I am excited to share it with people. I will be releasing the book in conjunction with my album, "this is my telos." Time is 18:30 for 19:00. Hope to see you there!

this is my telos

On Thursday 14 December 2017, I will be doing a double whammy launch of the "this is my telos" album and my second book on the music industry, "Get off your musical ass." Both are very special and dear to me, as they took time, love and effort to create. The launch is at Skoobs Theatre of Books in Montecasino, Johannesburg, time to be confirmed, but it'll probably be 18:30 for 19:30. I hope to see you there!

Pygmalion

I recently took a long, hard look at my music career. I've had some victories, I've had some defeats. I'm older, and I hope I'm wiser.

But it became acutely apparent that I have been neglecting my website for FIVE long years, while attempting to run my music career. Last year I ran into a chap who said to me, "Your website is out of date." Ouch. He was right.

During 2017, I made a decision that I would change that. So, this is my first post on my website in five years. Shameful. How can I call myself a…

on going gold & releasing my 8th album...

I wrote this on my Facebook page yesterday: "Hey Dad! Happy 68th birthday for yesterday. Miss you, but know you are still with me in spirit. How's Rod? Just wanted you to know that I have just released my 8th album, which is dedicated to you. Hope you love it! It's called 'A Cappella Christmas Vol. 2.' Enjoy. Much love, Rob. Xxxx" I couldn't help but cry, and I am glad they weren't tears of sorrow but of joy, like the ones I experienced in studio the other day - for the first time in my life!

What a year…

criticism & praise

Urban legend has it that if Madonna gets 10 critiques, with 9 being positive and 1 being negative, she tends to forget about the 9 good ones and fixates on the bad one. Maybe this is just the sensitive nature of the artist, or maybe she just wants to get it right and prove her critics wrong.

Either way, I can relate! I am doing a stint at Hyde Park Corner, a very snooty shopping centre in Johannesburg, every Saturday and Sunday in the month of August (like Madge, it's also my birthday this month). I…

confessions of a busker

Katie Melua once remarked, upon seeing a 6-year-old Russian boy busking in Moscow, that busking is a rite of passage for a musician, although she also said that she felt 6 was a little young!

Well, at age 40, I have decided to return to busking, and I have been doing it for almost 2 months now, on and off, every week. I must say it has not been easy!

I first tried busking at The Zone in Rosebank in Johannesburg 10 years ago, when I was in my early 30s. Since then they have built the Gautrain…

It feels amazing being at #1!

Quite inadvertently, 2 days ago, I was doing a routine check of my G Score, as suggested by Catherine Kaputa, when I stumbled across a link on Google to Energy 100 FM, a youth radio station broadcasting out of Windhoek, the capital of Namibia.

To my utter shock and delighted surprise, I discovered that the house remix of my track "Could This Be Love" with Cuebur and Shimza had hit no. 1 on the radio station on 5 April 2012 - two weeks ago already! The track was at no. 5 in March. This means that the music…

10 things I learnt releasing my Christmas album

I released my A Cappella Christmas album into stores last month. Even though it was not my first physical release, I still made a lot of mistakes and learnt so much from it. Here are 10 points I specifically want to document:

  1. Always start earlier! I was only able to afford the cost of the physical production at the end of November, so I only got my stock in December. It was way too late, and I did myself a grave disservice and damaged my sales by doing it so late.
  2. It always costs you more than you think…
